Mail from WordPress

How Avaloi sends the mail WordPress writes, how to capture it on a site that is not live yet, set up signed mail for your domain, set the rate limit, and read the sending log.

Parts of this feature are still being built. The Not yet section lists them.

The Mail tab controls what happens to the mail WordPress sends from an environment. Open your site, then Mail, to capture messages instead of sending them, add a signed-mail identity, change the rate limit, and read the sending log.

How WordPress mail is sent

Avaloi sends every message WordPress writes (password resets, order emails, form notices) for you. You do not need an SMTP plugin.

  • If the From address is on a sending domain you added and verified under Mail identities, the message goes out from that address.
  • Otherwise it goes out from Avaloi's shared address, with your site's name as the sender name. Replies still reach the original From address, because it is set as the reply address.
  • A message, attachments included, can be up to 2 MB. WordPress reports a larger one as failed.

A message usually leaves within a minute of WordPress sending it.

Turn on capture mode

Capture mode stores every message WordPress tries to send instead of sending it. Use it on a site that is not live yet, so a test order or a password reset never reaches a real inbox.

  1. Open your site, then Mail.
  2. Turn on capture mode.
  3. Save.

Avaloi applies the change through a job. While capture mode is on, nothing is sent.

Read captured messages

The Mail tab lists captured messages from the last seven days. Open a message to read it. Messages older than seven days are gone.

Set up signed mail

Signed mail lets receiving servers confirm that mail from your domain is yours.

  1. Under Mail identities, add your sending domain.
  2. Avaloi creates DKIM keys for it through a job.
  3. If the domain's DNS is on Cloudflare DNS, the DKIM, SPF, and DMARC records are written for you.
  4. Otherwise, the page shows the three records to add at your DNS provider.
  5. Avaloi also adds the domain to the mail provider. On Cloudflare DNS the records the provider asks for are written for you too. Otherwise the job's log lists them, and you add them at your DNS provider as well.
  6. The provider checks the records by itself, usually within minutes. Until it has, mail goes from the shared address.

Open an identity at any time to see its records.

Change the rate limit

The rate limit is 500 messages an hour per environment by default. Past the limit, Avaloi pauses sending: the extra messages are not sent, and the sending log marks them Paused. Change the limit on the Mail tab if your site sends more than that on purpose.

Read the sending log

The sending log lists every message WordPress sent from the environment in the last 30 days, newest first: the subject, how many recipients it had, the sender, when WordPress sent it, and what happened to it.

Status What it means
Sending Avaloi is handing the message to the mail provider.
Sent The mail provider took the message.
Delivered The receiving server accepted it.
Bounced The receiving server refused it. Check the address.
Marked as spam A recipient reported it as spam.
Captured Capture mode was on, so it was stored and not sent.
Paused The environment was over its hourly rate limit.
Not sent The mail provider refused it. The row says why.

The log never keeps message bodies or recipient addresses.

Limits

  • Captured messages stay for seven days.
  • The sending log keeps 30 days.
  • Rate limit: 500 messages an hour per environment by default.
  • Message size: 2 MB, attachments included. Up to 50 recipients.

Quick answers

My test site sent a real email. Turn on capture mode. Everything WordPress tries to send is then stored on the Mail tab instead.

How long do captured messages stay? Seven days.

Where are my DKIM records? Open the identity under Mail identities. If your DNS is on Cloudflare DNS they are already in your zone, with a lock.

Sending stopped after a burst of mail. You hit the rate limit. The sending log marks the extra messages Paused. Raise the limit if the burst was intended.

My mail comes from a noreply address. Your From domain is not a verified sending domain yet. Add it under Mail identities. Until then, replies still reach your From address.

A plugin says the mail relay is blocked. If your site sets WP_HTTP_BLOCK_EXTERNAL, add 10.42.0.1 to WP_ACCESSIBLE_HOSTS.

Not yet

Avaloi does not show whether the mail provider has verified your sending domain yet. The first message that goes out from your own domain is the proof: its sender in the Mail log changes from the shared address to your domain.
